Chandigarh, October 5: The Punjab Congress today submitted a representation to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), seeking disqualification of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Swaran Salaria.

A delegation led by Gurpartap Singh Mann, spokesperson for the state unit, stated that an FIR under Sections 376, 420 and 506 of the IPC was filed against Swaran Salaria on a woman’s complaint in Mumbai in 2014. After an investigation, a chargesheet was filed against Salaria under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Section 125 (A) of the Representation of People’s Act (RPA) provides for a punishment of up to six months of imprisonment or fine or both for furnishing wrong information or concealing any information in an election affidavit.

CPI opposes BJP candidate

New Delhi: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday urged voters to ensure the defeat of Akali-BJP candidate Swaran Salaria in the Gurdaspur byelection. Party chief Sudhakar Reddy said: “The CPI cadre will carry out a campaign against the SAD-BJP alliance.” He said the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre had made a mess of economy with its wrong priorities.

Washington : The Indian-American community in the US has urged the Trump administration to “fully support” India’s decision to revoke the constitutional provision that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir and to continue to exert pressure on Pakistan to end its support to cross-border terrorism.
