New Delhi/Chandigarh : The Centre today approved the release of Rs 100 crore to Punjab for developing religious and heritage memorials. The approval came after Local Bodies, Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu met Union Ministers Arun Jaitley (Finance), KJ Alphons (Tourism) and Hardeep Singh Puri (Housing and Urban Affairs) in New Delhi.
Sidhu said the Union Tourism Minister had cleared the state government’s Rs 100-crore project, of which Rs 32 crore would be spent on infrastructural development and facilities for pilgrims in Anandpur Sahib.
A sum of Rs 20 crore has been okayed for Fatehgarh Sahib; Rs 18 crore for Chamkaur Sahib; Rs 10 crore for Jallianwala Bagh; Rs 15 crore for Hussainiwala and Khatkar Kalan memorials associated with Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev; Rs 3 crore for the Saragarhi monument; and Rs 2 crore for the Kalanaur memorial.
Sidhu said Puri, who would meet Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh on January 6, gave assurance for infrastructural development and beautification of Amritsar.
The former BJP MP said decks had been cleared for the execution of the Smart City project, adding that the state government would contribute Rs 50 crore as its share, while getting Rs 350 crore for the project in three cities.
He said the state government’s plans to develop tourism sites under various circuits — Sikh, Mughal, Sufi, national valour — would act as game-changers in putting Punjab on the global tourism map.
