Punjab to have fire safety training centre soon: Sidhu

CHANDIGARH: Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said he has submitted a project of ₹262.50 crore to the Union urban development ministry. A fire safety training centre was also given clearance by the central government.

Sidhu said in a report sent to the director general (fire, civil defence), ₹270 crore was sought for fire stations, ₹ 86 crore for aerial ladders, ₹60 crore for advance rescue tenders, ₹18 crores for fire protection suits, ₹20 crore for quick response vehicles, ₹23 crore for a training centre, ₹5 crore for creating awareness regarding fire safety, ₹ 3 crore for fire audit and ₹5 crore for civil defence.

In a separate proposal submitted to the Union housing ministry, a case has been made out for ₹144 crore for fire tenders, ₹78 crore for aerial ladder, ₹20 crore for rescue tender, ₹17.60 crore for kits and ₹3 crore for life-saving equipment.

Sidhu said the director general gave on-the spot approval for a fire safety training centre.

‘BUILDINGS HAVING NON-FIRE SAFETY PLAINT TO BE SEALED’ The local bodies minister said the process has begun to seal buildings which have non-fire safety complaints. “Any building beyond 65-foot height should have a 15-foot wide corridor for free movement of fire tenders ,” said Sidhu.

The minister said the department will have a report within 30 days as to how many such illegal building are in the state. He also hinted at action against the officers who were behind giving clearance to such buildings.
