CM flexes his muscles, to finalise names of Mayors. The task of finalising the names of Mayors in three Corporations has landed in the lap of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, as the CM has taken it upon himself to set the ball in motion. Elected councillors of Congress had suggested MLAs of concerned areas to finalise the name of Mayor, who further forwarded it to the concerned minister and the minister forwarded the list to CM. However, in this chain, the name of state Congress president was missing.

Sources in the Local Bodies Department said that the name of Mayors for three Corporations is likely to be announced from Moti Mahal through sealed envelopes on January 20, as the last date for announcing them is January 24. Although the Congress has announced 50 per cent reservation to women, but in Mayor Issue, there will be no implementation of this reservation formula. Although, earlier it was planned that the post of Mayor for Jalandhar and one other Corporation should be for women, but sources stated that Chief Minister had not approved the reservation formula. Women candidates names will be included in the second and third tier posts.

Even the CM had directed the concerned minister to forward the files to him as he will decide the names. Sources also stated that due to party leaders lobbying for the post of Mayor, the concerned minister was seemingly unable to finalise the names of Mayoras well as other posts. The disappointed minister is learnt to have stated in a press conference that CM has the prerogative to announce the names. After the result of elections of three Corporations, a notification was issued on December 26 to appoint Mayors, Senior Deputy Mayors and Deputy Mayors and others for each body and the last date for it, is January 24.
