Govt gives green signal for NRI Sabha Punjab elections

Jalandhar – In a major development catering to the interest of NRIs across the globe, Punjab government has in-principle given the green signal for conducting the next NRI Sabha Punjab elections in the state. NRI Sabha, an NGO registered with the Punjab government was a platform for the expatriate community abroad to get their grievances related to property, matrimony and fraud cases addressed besides making them part of economic growth back home. The post of NRI Sabha Punjab president was lying vacant for the last over three years, after the former president Jasvir Singh Gill left the office in January 2015.

The last NRI Sabha Punjab elections were held in January 2013 with the active participation of NRI voters from the Gulf nations. Speaking to Daily Post, Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary, who is also the chairman of NRI Sabha Punjab said, “There is an official communication from the Punjab government to start the process of elections and we are working on it. Now, we are waiting for the final clearance for the dates from the Punjab government.” Chaudhary said, “We would be sending a proposal of elections for final approval to Chief Patron NRI Sabha ie Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. It will take just few days to send the proposal and then the elections would be held.”

The Divisional Commissioner also maintained that they empathise with the Punjabi diaspora, which had been waiting for the operationalisation of NRI Sabha Punjab. Notably, Doaba belt of Punjab comprised of majority NRIs abroad. Principal Secretary NRI Affairs S R Ladhar maintained that a representation had met him for conducting NRI Sabha elections. “There is no hindrance from the Punjab government in conducting the NRI Sabha elections. NRI Sabha chairman would finalised the process and date for the polls,” he added. Former NRI Sabha president Jasvir Singh Gill welcomed the Punjab government’s decision and said that the elections were much awaited for the welfare of NRIs abroad. “Punjabi diaspora would finally get their platform back,” he said.
