CHANDIGARH: The Congress on Saturday attacked the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) over their plan to hold a political conference during the Maghi mela at Muktsar on Sunday.
Akal Takht jathedar Gian Gurbachan Singh had instructed political parties not to hold their their conferences at the Saheedi Jor Mela at Fatehgarh Sahib in December.
Though the jathedar has since clarified that the instruction was only for that mela, the Congress has decided to follow the advice in “letter and spirit”. Asserting that Congress had in principle followed the Takht’s advice, state Congress chief and Gurdaspur MP Sunil Jakhar said: “The Akalis have been misusing the Panth to score political gains”.
He said the SAD-led government completely ignored Muktsar on development front even as it was former CM Parkash Singh Badal’s home district. “The Akalis only exploit feelings of people in the garb of religion,” Jakhar added.
