Appeal to farmers not to end life, debt waiver to be complete by Nov: Captain

PATIALA : Asserting that the state government was committed to the total implementation of its farm debt waiver programme by November 2018, Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has appealed to farmers not to commit suicide.

In a brief speech after taking the salute and unfurling the national flag at the Republic Day parade at the YPS Stadium on Friday, the CM said, “Each of 10.25 lakh farmers covered by the debt waiver scheme will benefit by November.”

Launching a new scheme, ‘Mahatama Gandhi Sarbat Vikas Yojana’, the CM said, “The government has identified a large number of distressed and needy people who have so far been deprived of pro-poor initiatives. Of such people, around 2 lakh will get start getting the benefit of 20 government schemes from today (Friday).” He also extended Republic Day greetings to people.

“The government has decided to waive off loans up to ₹50,000 that the Punjab Backward Classes Land Development and Finance Corporation has extended to beneficiaries,” the CM announced.

Lauding the disadvantaged students, Amarinder announced an award of Rs 1 lakh — from the CM’s fund — to each school/college that participated in the cultural function.

The CM also honoured freedom fighters and their families with shawls and sweets. He also felicitated 67 eminent personalities from different walks of life.
