PATIALA: Punjab’s health minister Brahm Mohindra has written to SAD and BJP parliamentarians from the state to oppose the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill proposed in Parliament by the BJP-led NDA government. Mohindra wrote a similar letter to Congress parliamentarians from the state, who are already toeing the party line to oppose the bill.
He, however, made a wider appeal by arguing that the bill it is against the idea of federal structure. Mohindra, who holds the portfolio of medical education and research, said in the letter, as shared with the media on Wednesday, “It seems that the draft of NMC bill has been prepared by non-medicos. I can say that this bill is dictatorial and impinges on the freedom of allopathic practitioners. It is a novel way to reward non-meritorious candidates... lt is against the spirit of scientific temper enshrined in the directive principles of the Constitution.”
He said the bill says that only five members from the states will be on the NMC.
