Punjabi language needs to be promoted more, says Preneet

PATIALA: A one-day World Punjabi Development Conference was organised in Kalidas auditorium at North zone cultural centre on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering, Preneet Kaur, former Union minister, said the society is known by its mother language, which needs to be given utmost importance.
“The Punjabi diaspora is contributing a lot to the promotion of not only Punjab language, but rich culture and traditions associated with the state,” she said.
Preneet added that the universities and other academic institutes must come forward for the development of Punjabi language among masses through medium of internet.
“Though Punjabi University is doing great efforts in development and promotion of Punjabi, but there is lot more required to do in this particular field,” she said.
She added that the state government is committed in preserving Punjabi language and culture and traditions of the state and for this, the government has revived heritage festivals so as to acquaint generations about Punjab.
The experts from different fields participated and emphasised on the importance of regional languages in the cultural development of the country. They mentioned that all developed countries of Europe have been using regional languages in their education system, so every citizen should contribute to the development of his mother tongue and other local languages as well.
Professor BS Ghuman, vicechancellor Punjabi university, said that the university is working upon softwares and search engines, which will help to promote Punjabi.
Meanwhile, Yashveer Goyal, a deaf and dumb boy from Bathinda, was honoured on the occasion for passing Class 12 with Punjabi as main medium of examination.
