CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress on Friday lashed out at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal for his call to gherao of the Vidhan Sabha on the first day of the budget session.

In a statement issued here, Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar and tourism and local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu termed the SAD decision undemocratic and shameful. It was a proof of the Akali leadership’s disregard to parliamentary principles of democracy, said the Congress leaders, citing the opposition party’s unconstitutional behaviour in the House during previous sessions.

The Akalis had disrupted every session of the state assembly since the Congress came to power, Jakhar and Sidhu said, adding that these acts were clear evidence that the Akali Dal did not want to have any meaningful discussion or debate in the House but was resorting to petty street politics to play on public sentiments. This was hardly surprising since it was more than obvious that the party had no political agenda nor did it have any facts to take on the government, Congress leaders said.

SIDHU CHALLENGES SUKHBIR FOR DEBATE

A day after SAD president Sukhbir Badal called Navjot Singh Sidhu a white elephant for the Congress, Sidhu on Friday lashed out at Sukhbir saying he is ‘richest SAD president’ in the party.
