Chandigarh/New Delhi – Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan has expressed his opinion that the Canadian High Commission should take initiative to arrange a meeting between Canadian PM Trudeau and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh. It has been learnt that Sajjan has asked Canadian High Commissioner in India to take steps for such a meeting. No official confirmation on this issue so far but the sources of High Commission indicated that the issue is being discussed.

The Canadian premier visited India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trudeau will also visit Agra, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, besides Delhi. In Amritsar, Trudeau will be visiting the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrines. Amarinder Singh had last week said that he was looking forward to meeting the Canadian Prime Minister.

Significantly, Amarinder Singh had earlier refused to meet Candian Defence minister Harjit Sajjan during the latter’s visit to Punjab last year. He had even accused Sajjan of being a “Khalistani sympathiser”. Meanwhile, a team comprising Canadian officials today visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

“A team comprising Canadian officials paid a visit to the Golden Temple in the wake of the visit of Canadian PM to Amritsar,” said the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Chief Secretary Roop Singh. The committee, a top religious body of the Sikh community, has planned to honour the dignitary. “We will give him a warm welcome and honour him as per Sikh tenets,” he said.
