Ludhiana: Race for Mayor’s post hots up

Ludhiana – With the clear majority in favor of Congress party in Municipal Corporation (MC) elections, the race for the post of first citizen- Mayor hot’s up. However it is yet to be decided that the male or female councilor will become Mayor. This time 48 women have become councilors in the house of 95 members.

The leaders who were in the top of the race were district Congress president Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. Gogi was also demanding MLA ticket but he was denied at last moment. Now the senior leader who is also close to MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kishori Lal (close associate of Sonia Gandhi) is eyeing on the post of Mayor. If female councilor will become Mayor, then Gogi may become senior Deputy Mayor or Deputy Mayor. Female councilor Mamta Ashu is also on the top of list of contenders for the post of Mayor. She is wife of MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu.

The name of MLA Ashu is also considered for the cabinet rank. If Ashu will get cabinet berth than Mamta Ashu will be out from the race of Mayor. Another leader who is also eyeing on the post of Mayor if Pal Singh Grewal. He has joined Congress few days before Assembly elections after quiting Shiromani Akali dal.

Grewal is close to CM Amarinder Singh but the local MP, MLAs want veteran party leader should become mayor. The names of five times councilors Balkar Singh and Jai Parkash is also in the list of contenders for the Mayor Post. Senior party leader Amrit Varsha Rampal who was senior deputy Mayor ten years ago also lobbying hard for the prestigious post. Sources said that CM Captain Amarinder Singh after getting recommendations from PPCC President Sunil Jakhar and MP Ravneet Singh Bittu will meet Rahul Gandhi to finalise the name of Mayor
