CM to felicitate Asian wrestling gold medalist this week

CHANDIGARH: Even as the Tarn Taran district administration and the state Sports Department gave a rousing welcome on Monday to the Asian Wrestling Championship gold medal winner on her return home, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated Navjot Kaur on her superb performance and announced his decision to formally felicitate her later this week.

The Chief Minister lauded the daughter of the soil that for bringing laurels not only for Punjab but for the nation too. Disclosing this here, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said the young lady was given a warm welcome in her home village on the directives of Captain Amarinder. The district administration led by Additional Deputy Commissioner and Sub Divisional Magistrate was present to welcome Navjot in her native Bagria village and to congratulate her parents Sukhchain Singh and Gian Kaur along with coach Ashok Kumar.

Captain Amarinder said that Navjot had done both Punjab and the country proud and he was confident that the immensely-talented woman would continue this spree of bagging international positions in the future too. It was a matter of great pride that Navjot Kaur had become the first woman in the country, who bagged gold medal in Asian championship in Bishkck, capital of Kyrgyzstan, he said, adding that the rare feat of young Punjabi woman wrestler would go a long way in motivating her peers, especially the budding wrestlers, to prove their mettle in national and international tournaments. He said that her achievement would also bolster the confidence of young wrestlers to repeat the success story in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
