Chandigarh – Members of Parliament from Punjab led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunil Jakhar on Thursday called on Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan to felicitate her on the International Women’s Day in the parliament house.
Jakhar accompanied by MPs Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Santokh Chaudhary and Bhagwant Mann while interacting with the media outside the parliament house said that respect to women is the main foundation of our traditional culture. “To respect woman’s honour is the moral and basic duty of all. Only that society can make progress in which women have equal rights. In our country, women have got equal rights in politics, but they need to be strengthened economically now” he added.
Emphasising that economic freedom can elevate women’s social status; he said that an economically strong woman can contribute not only in the progress of her family but also of the nation. Taking up another important issue, he said it was unfortunate that the Central government had not released funds to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th birth anniversary. “Punjab government had approached the Union government in this connection but no provision has been made in this budget by Union Finance Minister, he rued.
Jakhar said that Telugu Desam Party, a partner of NDA, had quit two berths in Union Cabinet as Modi government turned down the demand for a special package to Andhra Pradesh. However, in the greed of only one ministerial post, the Shiromani Akali Dal had mortgaged the interests of Punjab with Modi government. The SAD had never put any pressure on the Centre over the issues concerning farmers or for release of fund for Gurpurab celebration, he said.
Recalling the tenure of the previous UPA government led by Manmohan Singh; Jakhar said that during the 300th Gurtagadi celebrations of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2008, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh not only released Rs 1,100 crores for the development of Nanded Sahib, but also included the same under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Development Mission. “On the other hand, NDA government is doing nothing for the development of Holy City Amritsar,” he added.
