Chandigarh – The defeat of BJP in the Parliamentary by-polls in Uttar Pradesh has seemingly paved the way for Cabinet expansion in Punjab. According to sources in the central Congress office in Delhi, the expansion will take place in the first week of April, most likely on April 2. After the exchange of lists of names, now the approval is on the final stage, which is with Rahul Gandhi. It is believed that the meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Captain Amarinder Singh will take place on March 18, on the concluding day of the Congress session.
Although it is not confirmed, but it is believed that the departments of one or two ministers are likely to be reshuffled. The activities for the Cabinet expansion are continuing since one year. Political circumstances and incomplete decision on the names had led to repeated postponement of the expansion. The election outcome of three North-East states had put Punjab Cabinet expansion forward, which was earlier to be finalised in the first week of March.
Although it was being said that the expansion may take place in the first week of April, but nobody is ready to say anything about it confidently. But now there is positive atmosphere in the Congress over the result of bypolls in UP and Bihar. Sources said that now expansion is almost final. According to information, the party high command had sought suggestions on the names from Captain Amarinder Singh as well as Members of Parliament Partap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo.
At present in the list, there are names, which are to be finalised by the party president, like Šukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Rakesh Pandey, Surinder Dawar, Vijay Índer Singla, Raja Warring, Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, OP Soni, Raj Kumar Verka, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Randeep Singh Nabha, Pargat Singh, Fatehjung Singh Bajwa, Sangat Singh Giljian and Kuljit Singh Nagra. A total of nine ministers are to be inducted. It is also a coincidence that during the three-day session of the Congress, all the Punjab Congress MLAs will be in Delhi.
