Chandigarh – The people of Punjab should may now have to bear the burden of five more taxes which are likely to be imposed on them any time now. The Assembly, while giving all rights, has authorised the Chief Minister to impose taxes amid the passing of Social Security Act Bil- 2018. It will be up to him to impose such taxes whenever he wants.

According to the Bill, a trust would be formed under the chairmanship of the CM, while the Finance Minister, Welfare Minister and Social Security Minister will be the members of the trust. This trust will be able to impose a tax of Rs 2 on every litre of petrol and diesel, one percent of tax on registration of new vehicles, surcharge upto 10 percent on heavy vehicles, 5 percent surcharge on power bills and 10 percent surcharge excise duty and licence fee.

After the approval of the Bill, the government will be able to impose the aforementioned taxes by an order. The fund collected from these taxes would be spent on Social Securities schemes including pension, helath and road accident insurance, scholarship schemes, unemployment allowances, aashirwad and other schemes.
