Chandigarh: Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi finally got a chance to give it back to the Akali Dal for the “patch work” taunts. For two years, Channi was mocked at for his reply to Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal's query on development works done by the Capt Amarinder Singh government during his previous tenure from 2002-2007. Channi had said the Capt Amarinder Singh government had completed patch work on all major roads in the state. Now, Channi asked Sukhbir why he was the only Akali Dal president who was not wearing a “kirpan” — which is mandatory for all Amritdhari Sikhs. For a change, Sukhbir had no reply and left it to his party MLAs to create ruckus on the issue. TNS
Retirement gift — Out-of-turn promotion
Ferozepur: The state government gave a “special gift” to IPS officer Rajinder Singh on the penultimate day of his service. Posted as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Ferozepur range), Rajinder, who was due to retire on March 31, was not only promoted to the rank of Inspector General of Police but also got the honour to become the first-ever IG of the Ferozepur range. His promotion was due for some time and there were two more senior IPS officers in line. However, as a goodwill gesture, he was promoted out of turn. The orders were issued by the Department of Home Affairs and Justice on Friday despite being a holiday so that the officer could retire with better pension benefits and senior rank. Rajinder expressed gratitude to DGP Suresh Arora for his conscientious effort, who personally took up the matter with the Chief Minister on holiday.
DAV alumni take a trip down memory lane
Abohar: Three generations got together and shared their life experiences at the alumni meet of DAV College of Education here on Friday. The meet was part of its golden jubilee year celebrations. Prominent among the participants was alumni Sarvshakti Arora, daughter of octogenarian couple Dharam Chand Arya and Vidyavati Arya, who served society till their last breath. Vidyavati was among the founder members of Arya Mahila Propkarini Sabha that helped hundreds of widows and deserted women. Sarvshakti served as councillor in the local Municipal Council and continued teaching in Swami Keshwanand Senior Secondary School and other institutions even after superannuation. Her work in women empowerment and campaigns against social evils acclaimed a lot of appreciation. Alumni meet convener (Principal) Dr Urmil Sethi felicitated Sarvshakti and other veteran alumni. She hoped students would draw inspiration from life and teachings of such selfless icons.
Abohar artiste felicitated
Abohar: Prof Gaurav Vij, stage artiste and director, was honoured by the Punjab Naatshala on its 20th Foundation Day last week. Naatshala founder Jitender Brar, Padma Shri awardee writer Surjit Patar and comedy star Bharti Singh felicitated Vij for his achievements in theatre during the past decade. His best was “Jinney Jhalley, Mere Palley” a comedy play that was repeatedly staged at Naatshala, besides other places in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Top cops run marathon, halt traffic
Patiala: City residents were left harassed when the traffic was made to halt due to a half marathon in which senior police officials were participating on Sunday morning. Around 7.30 am, the traffic personnel were seen making way for contestants by stopping vehicles and commuters at all major roundabouts for over 20 minutes. Instead of using the designated route, hundreds of contestants were seen passing through roads, wasting commuters' time. On being asked, traffic personnel said they had been ordered to stop traffic till all participants crossed roads as their seniors were also participating. It has become a routine for these organisers to involve local senior police officials to use traffic cops for such private events.
Sidhu forgets Ghuggi a Congressman
Chandigarh: On Saturday, Minister for Cultural Affairs and Tourism Navjot Singh Sidhu addressed a press conference to announce the setting up of Punjab Culture Commission. Sidhu was accompanied by comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi. Ghuggi left the AAP to join the Congress after he was removed from the post of state convener. Referring to Ghuggi, Sidhu repeatedly said though they were from different political parties, but on this issue they were on the same page. “Now you work in the same party,” a man sitting next to Ghuggi intervened. Sidhu took no time to correct himself. But hardly anybody remembered when Ghuggi joined the Congress and what role he has in the party.
