Amritsar : The SAD-BJP alliance seems to be divided on the move of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to merge the DSP cadre in Chandigarh with other union territories (UTs) by altering the Punjab Reorganisation Act that keeps a sharing ratio of 60:40 for Punjab and Haryana.

The SAD has rejected this notification and Union Minister Harsimrat Badal had on Wednesday approached the Home Minister to withdraw it.

However, BJP state president Shwait Malik has defended the MHA move, saying that it was aimed at providing good governance.

Malik, who is also Rajya Sabha MP, claimed that the issue was being blown out of proportion by the Congress as the move was prompted in view of altercations between local officers, resulting in insubordination.

“As far as Chandigarh’s claim on Punjab is concerned, the state BJP will stand by it. The recent notification issued by the MHA will bring better coordination in maintaining law and order. Capt Amarinder Singh has been giving it a political colour by projecting that it will hamper Punjab’s right on Chandigarh,” he said.

SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said the notification was nothing but an “unjustifiable step” oblivious of the history of Chandigarh, which was a contiguous and integral part of Punjab.
