AMRITSAR: In another blow to the beleaguered Akali Dal, veteran leader and Lok Sabha MP Ranjit Singh Brahmpura on Tuesday resigned from all party posts on health grounds.

The Khadoor Sahib MP is the second senior leader to quit the party posts within a month after Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa resigned as party secretary general, also on health grounds.

Talking to reporters at his residence, Brahmpura said he was upset with the way the sacrilege incidents were handled by the previous SAD-BJP government.

Brahmpura, who was holding the post of senior vice-president and was a member of party’s core committee, also declared he would not contest the next Lok Sabha polls, but would complete this term.

He said he would remain active in politics and continue to work as a member of the party, but without holding any office. He was accompanied by senior Akali leader Rattan Singh Ajnala.

He also expressed anguish over the previous government’s decision to pardon Sirsa dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a blasphemy case in 2015.

On the occasion, Ajnala also hinted at resigning from party posts. “Let the time come”, he said, when asked about his plans, if any, to resign.

A day after Dhindsa resigned from party posts on September 30, Brahmpura, Ajnala and former minister and SGPC member Sewa Singh Sekhwan had virtually raised a banner of revolt saying “all was not well within the party.”

Later, the trio also conducted meetings and boycotted party’s Jabar Virodhi rally in Patiala on October 7.
