Fatehgarh Sahib : Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said here today that he would not tolerate attempts to disturb peace in the state and damage the state’s secular fabric. Referring to the vandalisation of a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Ludhiana, he warned the Akalis not to repeat such incidents.
Replying to a query by mediapersons on the SAD demand that the Congress should remove all statues of Rajiv Gandhi from the state on its own, he pointed out that there were statues of several senior Akali leaders too. “My government is committed to protecting the statues of leaders of various political parties,” he said.
On Rajiv Gandhi’s alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, he said the Akalis were trying to spread communal hatred by dragging the Gandhi family into the matter.
Recalling the supreme sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh’s Sahibzadas and mother Mata Gujri, Capt Amarinder Singh said the Sikh religion propagated communal harmony. Earlier, the CM paid obeisance at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and partook of langar.
