New Delhi : Parliamentarians from Punjab on Thursday demonstrated outside Parliament on Thursday to press for the immediate release of Rs 1,287 crore for scholarship of Scheduled Caste (SC) students.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunil Jakhar, accompanied by MP Santokh Chaudhary, Ravneet Singh Bittu and Gurjeet Singh Aujla, said the previous Congress-led government strengthened the post-matric scholarship scheme for SC/ST students in 2010 to boost education for distressed section of the country.

He said, “The Congress believes that the social-economic status of the weaker sections of society can be uplifted only with education.”

He alleged that the previous Akali-BJP government in Punjab created hindrance in delivery of the scholarship stipend to the SC students. Now, the Modi government was not releasing Rs 1,287 crore to the state to implement its hidden anti-SC/ST agenda.
