AMRITSAR:Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on Punjab’s debt-waiver schem, state Congress chief and member of Parliament (MP) from Gurdaspur Sunil Jakhar said that ‘desh ka chowkidar chor hi nai jhutha bhi hai (the country’s chowkidar is not only a thief but liar too).
Jakhar was addressing a press conference here on Saturday. He was accompanied by Punjab jails minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and MLA Dr Raj Kumar Verka.
At the Dharamshala rally on Thursday, PM Modi had said, “In Punjab, don’t know how many promises were made to waive off farmers loans before polls, not even a penny has been given till date”.
Jakhar said, “During the rally, the PM lied by saying Punjab has not waived off farm loans. The reality is that Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government has written-off ₹3,550-crore debt of the state’s 4.17 lakh farmers.”
“We expected Modi to praise Punjab government for loan waiver, but he tried to befool the country’s farmers by lying,” he said.
Referring to UPA government’s ₹72,000-crore debt waiver, Jakhar said, “We were hoping that Modi too will announce some relief for the farmers, but he criticised Punjab government’s efforts instead.”
Jakhar further said during the coming session of the Parliament, the Congress will move a breach of privilege motion against the PM for lying.
“The issue will be raised in the Parliament to show the ‘liar face’ of the Prime Minister to the country,” he said.
On the ‘Accidental Prime Minister’ movie, Jakhar said it served the agenda of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
