IN BADAL VILLAGE, SAD NOMINEE UDAY DHILLON LOST TO CONGRESS CANDIDATE JABARJANG MUKHA BY 376 VOTES; IN OTHER VILLAGES TOO, THE RULING CONGRESS CANDIDATES WIN BY SIGNIFICANT MARGINS.
MUKTSAR : The panchayat poll results have been a major setback to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Muktsar district, the home turf of the Badals.
The Congress leaders, however, are chirpy. In Lambi, the constituency of former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, Congress-backed candidates have won 64 of 75 (85%) of panchayat elections.
Muktsar Congress president Gurmeet Khudiyan said, “In 64 panchayats, candidates backed by the Congress have won. This shows the public resentment against the Badals.”
In Badal village, the native village of Badals, SAD candidate Uday Dhillon lost to Congress candidate Jabarjang Singh Mukha by 376 votes. In other villages including Bheetiwala, Midhukhera, Ghaggad, Mithdi, Bhagu and Maan in Lambi segment, Congress men won by significant margins.
In Chak Baja village in Muktsar constituency, which is also the native village of Manjinder Singh Bittu, senior SAD leader and son of former Akal Takht chief, the Congress candidate Amandeep Kaur defeated SAD’s Ramandeep.
“During the last Lok Sabha election, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the Bathinda MP, had secured a margin of 34,000 votes from Lambi, at a time when his father-in-law was the chief minister of the state. The results of these villages will also impact the result of the Bathinda seat during the Lok Sabha polls,” Khudiyan claimed.
Meanwhile, residents of Sikhwala village protested in Lambi against the result of the panchayat election of their village and also blocked the road for some time.
