PATIALA : Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday asked elected panchayat representatives to make their villages drug-free while ensuring their holistic development.

Administering the oath of office and drug abuse prevention officers (DAPO) to panches, sarpanches, zila parishad and block samiti members of Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib districts, the CM assured them of all possible help from the government for allround development of villages. He said the elected representatives had an important role to play in ending drug abuse and safeguarding the future of coming generations.

“This is the first responsibility I am entrusting to you,” the CM said before administering the oath of drug abuse prevention officers to the elected representatives. Pointing out that an entire generation has been wiped out by the menace of drugs, the CM said he had sworn to break the backbone of drugs and his government has achieved massive success in breaking the supply chain. The DAPO and buddy programmes, as well as the Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) clinics, had proven to be a huge success and it was now their responsibility to finish the problem of drug abuse, he said.
