CHANDIGARH/FEROZEPUR:The Punjab Congress on Wednesday suspended MLA Kulbir Singh Zira from the primary membership of the party for indiscipline. His suspension was announced by Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar at a press conference. The action against the Zira MLA came four days after his public outburst at an official event that left the top brass of the Congress government and the state unit red-faced.

“The high command and the state Congress have taken a serious note of the allegations levelled by the member on a public platform. His remarks undermined the efforts of the state government and amounted to gross indiscipline,” Jakhar told reporters.

On January 12, Zira had boycotted the oath-taking ceremony of sarpanches and panches at Ferozepur, venting his anger against the functioning of Inspector General (IG), Ferozepur Range, Mukhwinder Singh Chhina, and other police officials. He walked out of the function after alleging from the stage that the police was protecting liquor contractors in the area.

Jakhar, while announcing the disciplinary action against the MLA, said that Zira should have taken up the matter at an appropriate party forum instead of going public with his grievance. Reacting to his suspension, Zira, who stuck to his guns, said he would continue his fight against corruption.

“My fight is not against the chief minister or the state government. I am with the party and will pursue the matter till action is taken against police officials who are not performing their duty,” he told a television channel.

The MLA also said that he would meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi to seek their attention.
