PATIALA : Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday underlined the need for people to make judicious use of their voting right to rid the nation of “anti-democratic forces”.

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government, the CM said the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will give citizens a chance to “save themselves and the country from the divisive and destructive policies of the central government by bringing in the much-needed political change in the system”. He was addressing the gathering after hoisting the Tricolour at the Republic Day function here.

“The constitution, which forms the bedrock of our systems and ideologies, itself has been endangered through brazen violation of its rules by the incumbent BJP-led government at the Centre,” said Amarinder.

ON KARTARPUR CORRIDOR

The CM hailed opening of the Kartarpur corridor as a victory of the Congress, which had been pursuing the matter for long.

Amarinder said the process of land acquisition for the corridor — which will connect Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan, with Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur and facilitate visafree movement of Indian Sikh pilgrims on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in November — had already been initiated and development works started.

ON WELFARE SCHEMES Amarinder said the Congress government was well on its way to implement various pre-poll promises to bring Punjab back on the “path of peace, progress and prosperity”, which he alleged the previous Akali-BJP government had destroyed.

Underlining his government’s focus on youth and farmers, the CM said he believed if the “naujawan” and “kisan” could prosper, the state would make new strides in development.

Lamenting the shortfall in procurement of foodgrains by the Food Corporation of India, Amarinder said if the central agency failed to pick up wheat soon, the state would have to make alternative arrangements for storage.
