Chandigarh : Much before any formal declaration of the Lok Sabha elections, Chandigarh has become a battleground of senior Congress leaders aspiring to get the party ticket from the city beautiful. Normally the seat has been a pocket burrow of four-time MP Pawan Bansal who has been a natural choice of the Congress for the seat. But this time around, Bansal, who turned 70 last year, has found a surprise challenge not only from the Congress bigwig Manish Tiwari, who represented the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat earlier, but also from a political new entrant Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Punjab Cabinet minister Navjot Sidhu. While the Congress’s contest with the rival political parties in Chandigarh yet to shape up, it is intense wrangling within the party for the Lok Sabha ticket that has caught the public eye. There are all indications that the rival Congress aspirants would become a bigger challenge for the party than the threat coming from the rival political parties. Apparently upset Pawan Bansal has been trying to hold his nerves and project himself as the only claimant to the party ticket. Talking to Daily Post, Pawan Bansal who is expected to formally give his application in a day or two said, “People and the party high command know who is Pawan Bansal, I do not need any introduction. So I am quite hopeful that party will pick me.”

While Manish Tiwari and Navjot Kaur Sidhu have formally filed their applications at the party office for the Lok Sabha ticket, Bansal would be following the suit in a day or two. Responding to a question that as Navjot Kaur Sidhu and Manish Tewari have already thrown their hat in the ring, it will certainly be an uphill task for the party high command to decide as whom to choose, Bansal said, that like every year, this time too, before taking the final decision, the party would consider the merits, demerits of the candidates and the peculiarities of the constituency, the knowledge of the constituency. “I am confident that in view of my work in past 40 years right from my student days holding elected positions and keeping all this in mind party would certainly choose me for this position.” Bansal further said that in the last party meeting here as it was suggested that a resolution should be passed from the local and district party leaders that his name should be sent to the party high command for contesting the elections might have accelerated Tiwari and Kaur to give their application. Sources said that vying for the party ticket, the three party bigwigs have already started lobbying hard in Delhi, even as Dr Sidhu started holding local meetings last week sending strong signals.
