The Congress rally at Baba Bakala last year had drawn a large crowd and in terms of numbers, it surpassed the Akali show. However, the party fared far below expectations in the assembly elections, winning just nine of 25 seats in the Majha region.

This time around, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh will not be there, as, according to party sources, he has gone abroad. It is not unusual for the ‘maharaja’ to stay away from such rallies in such hot and humid conditions.

After being voted out of power in 2007, Capt had stayed away from Baba Bakala till 2011.

In his absence, MLA Lal Singh will lead the Congress brigade. Another notable absentees will be leader of the opposition in the assembly Sunil Jakhar and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, both of whom are also out of the country.

Congress leaders from the Majha area, including most MLAs, are expected to be present at the rally.

Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa, who is in the running for the PPCC post, is likely to be attend the rally.
