LUDHIANA: Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh led a massive protest against the tax regime of the SAD-BJP government here on Monday. The sixhour rally concluded around 2 pm with Amarinder’s address, in which he said that instead of imposing taxes, the state government should have made investment-friendly policies to generate revenue and jobs.

Amid slogans and flanked by senior partymen -- including leader of opposition Sunil Jakhar, local MP and party spokesman Manish Tewari and several MLAs -- Amarinder said that when the state’s economy “is in tatters”, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his family were taking “world tours funded by public money”.
“What was the need to buy a helicopter for Rs 38 crore? This clearly shows that this government is robbing people,” he said.
He also questioned the logic of having 21 chief parliamentary secretaries and many advisors to the CM with cabinet rank and perks. “The government must stop the wasteful expenditure rather than imposing taxes,” he said.
Ludhiana district Congress committee president Pawan Dewan and MLAs Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Gurkirat Kotli, Surinder Dawar, Rakesh Pandey, Amrik Dhillon and Gurcharan Singh Boparai were also present at the protest, after which the leaders submitted a memorandum, addressed to the governor, to the deputy commissioner.
Others present included Punjab Youth Congress president Vikram Chaudhary, Tej Parkash, Milkiat Singh Birmi, Jaspal Singh Khangura, Isher Singh Meharban , Vikram Bajwa, Jagjivan Gill, Gurdeep Bhaini, Gurmail Pahelwan, Leena Taparia, Jagdeep Sidhu, Parminder Mehta, Amarjit Singh Tikka , Sonu Dhesi , Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, Pappi Prashar, Major Amardeep, Karanpal Sekhon and Anand Swarup Singh Mohi.
