Condemning the stand taken by the Akali leadership with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal opposing the FDI in retail while Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal first supporting it and then opposing it, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Capt Amarinder Singh said that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is a born farmer and he must support foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail as the FDI would be in favour of the farmers.
Targeting Badal and NDA during Congress rally at Chhappar Mela, he said Badal had opposed the move just to oblige his alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He pointed out, even Badal himself had told reporters that he did not care whether opposing the FDI was in favour or against Punjab, but he had to go along with BJP on the issue.
He warned the Akalis, particularly the Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia against using arm-twisting tactics against Congressmen and forcing them to join his party. He said, if they (the Akalis) think they can weaken the Congress this way they are mistaken.
Capt Amarinder also warned Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of not taking him lightly as situation might change anytime. “It does not take much time for circumstances to change”, he said. Reiterating that the Akalis were using the arm-twisting tactics to make the Congressmen joint the Akali Dal, he said, it was a matter of time only when the tide will turn against the Akalis themselves.
