Amritsar : Raj Kumar Verka, Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, has directed the Punjab Vigilance Bureau to submit an inquiry into the alleged embezzlement of Shagun Scheme funds within a month.
Talking to mediapersons here today, he said failure to do so would force the commission to press for a CBI inquiry into the matter.
He said office-bearers of the CPI, Amritsar (Rural) unit, had submitted a report alleging that funds had been given to "bogus recepients" in two Amritsar villages.
The CPI report said that at least 85 brides of Fatehpur village and 40 brides of Guruwali village were shown to have been given funds. None of them were found to be residents of these villages.
Verka said the village panchayats too had given in writing that these brides were not local residents.
Verka said he had written to the Director-General of Police (DGP), Punjab, to direct the crime branch to inquire into the disbursal of funds to “bogus” recipients of the two villages.
“Public funds meant for the welfare of Scheduled Caste women were siphoned off which is a serious crime and the commission will ensure that the investigation reaches its logical end,” he added.
