Chandigarh : Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi created a flutter when he said that seven out of 10 youths in Punjab were drug addicts.
While addressing the students of Panjab University, Gandhi scion accused the Punjab government of not utilizing the funds sent for the scholarship of students. He said the government of Punjab returned the amount every year without spending it on the people for whom it was meant for.
He also exhorted the youth of the country to join politics to root out corruption and other ills the society was facing today.
While recounting his meeting with the ambassadors of different countries held in last week at Delhi he said they were worried about the economic slowdown in their countries but all agreed that India’s forte was human resources in this century, like oil power of the Saudi Arabia in the last century. He regretted that the participation of the youth in the politics was not sufficient and this needed to be increased. Rahul said that Congress had opened the doors for the youths to join politics which no other party had done.
He said that they had seen more development in the states where the participation of the women in politics was higher. He said that he wanted to see a woman chief minister of Punjab in the next 10 years.
Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the drug problem, SAD MP Naresh Gujral said, “I am not a mathematician like Rahul who after a flying visit to Punjab has discovered that seven out of 10 children in Punjab are addicted to drugs.”
Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal said the Punjab government had no control over the flow of drugs into the state from Pakistan and that the problem was a national one.
