CHANDIGARH: A move has been initiated to mobilise all the opposition parties to confront the Akali Dal-BJP government on the issue of deteriorating law and order in Punjab. What is all the more serious is the involvement of Akali leaders in some serious incidents in recent times.
According to sources, state Congress chief Capt. Amarinder Singh and the Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Sunil Jakhar were approached yesterday for this purpose. Capt. Singh was in Delhi. The response from both of them was stated to be positive.
The form of agitation and timing would be decided at a joint meeting that is likely to be convened for this purpose.
The cases involving the Akali leaders in incidents relating to law and order are continuing. The first such serious case during recent times was the abduction of a minor girl Shruti Sachdeva in Faridkot at gun point. The killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector Ravinder Pal Singh by an Akali leader in Amritsar has sent shock waves across the country. Within days, a traffic constable was attacked by the relative of an Akali leader in Gurdaspur. In the most recent case, an Akali leader and his goons opened fire in Muktsar district.
“It is the gun culture that is taking over the state and nobody is safe. What is all the more condemnable is that in most of such cases, it is the Akali leaders who are involved. Even the BJP should ponder over the situation”, said Communist Party of India’s national executive committee member Dr. Joginder Dayal.
It may be mentioned that the Sanjha Morcha has already decided to take to streets on issues that also include law and order.
