Amritsar: A day after Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal ordered action against Akali leaders who had recommended that Ranjit Singh Rana be taken into the party fold, Upkar Singh Sandhu, district (urban) unit chief, today expelled office-bearers Baljit Singh Billa, senior vice-president, and Baljinder Singh Dhillon, vice-president.
Rana is the key accused in the murder of Assistant Sub-Inspector Ravinderpal Singh. An Akali leader, who did not want to be named, claimed that Rana was mainly known for ferrying people to Akali rallies.
Sandhu said: “We have started screening the antecedents of all Akali workers. Block presidents and ward heads have been told to check the background of every party activist. They have been warned that they will be held responsible in case a worker is found involved in any nefarious activity.”

Demand for President’s rule ‘illogical’
Bholath: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has termed the Congress demand for President’s rule as illogical. He was talking to mediapersons at Bholath MLA Jagir Kaur’s residence in Begowal on Tuesday. “ Policeman Ravinderpal’s murder in Amritsar and the beating up of a NDTV reporter in Jalandhar are isolated incidents. The police acted swiftly in both the cases. Punjab is relatively more peaceful than other states," claimed the Chief Minister.
