Chandigarh : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday warned against what he called as ‘anarchy and lawlessness’ in Punjab and asked the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to ‘perform or leave.’
In a statement issued here, Amarinder pointed out that the law and order situation in Punjab was worse as the ‘Akalis had become a law unto themselves.’ He asked the chief minister to ‘tame the Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia as his people had let a reign of terror on the policemen.’
He pointed out, “Only yesterday, a close associate of Majithia had beaten up a senior police officer and broke his leg. Earlier, in Amritsar an Akali leader shot dead an ASI, who tried to object to their eve-teasing of his daughter.”
Former CM warned the CM against ‘inaction and surrender to his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal.’ “During the ruckus in Punjab Assembly when Bikram Majithia abused a Congress legislator and Chief Minister Badal tried to intervene, Sukhbir stopped him and asked him to sit down,” he alleged.
Joining the issue, the Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar said, “Yet another attack on senior police officer by Youth Akali Dal leader stamps the cry of allegation by Congress that YAD Chief Bikramjit Singh Majithia and his men are nothing but criminals donning the cloak of politician to intimidate and incapacitate all organs of government including police.”
“While the police spokesman under pressure is trying to pass this incidence as typical ‘hotel brawl’ the fact of the matter is that the attacker YAD leader and his henchmen knew the police officer very well and yet fearlessly attacked him and broke his leg to instil fear in him,” he alleged.
Jakhar demanded, “The mobile phone details of Sunny and his men and the CCTV footage must be made public to unravel the truth about both the proximity of the culprits and how the incident at restaurant happened.”
“CM Parkash Singh Badal has compulsion to be in state of self-denial and invent a palpable explanation for every such episode, but fact of the matter is he has lost grip over administration and the multi-power centres within his family and government are working at cross purposes and thereby undermining governance in the state,” also alleged the CLP leader.
Jakhar said, “Responding to the call of ‘Raj dharma’ and to restore faith in governance by giving clear signal against hooliganism and criminality Badal Sahib must rise to occasion and divest Bikram Majithia of his cabinet rank.”
On personal tour out of country, the CLP leader threatened to launch a state-wide agitation on law and order issue in January, by taking along all the MLAs of the Congress party.
