SAD sarpanch booked for attempted murder in Gurdaspur

Gurdaspur: The Gurdaspur police has booked the sarpanch of Dairiwal Daroga village, known to be an Akali loyalist, under Section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) for assaulting one of his relatives on the complaint of the victim's wife, Daljit Kaur.

Sarpanch Joginder Singh and his acquaintances Harpreet Singh, Jagtar Singh, Harpal Singh and Sukhdev Singh, allegedly attacked his relative Kulwinder Singh with guns and sharp edged weapons. Tension had been brewing in the village for the past few days and the Dhariwal police had tried to affect a compromise between the two parties but in vain.

The victim was rushed to the Amritsar Medical College. His condition was stated to be critical.

Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Raj Jit Singh said police teams had been sent to various places to nab the accused. Terrified, the sarpanch's relatives had locked their house and had fled the village.The officer said he was under no pressure to shield the sarpanch.

“I know the sarpanch is aligned with the SAD. But that will not deter us from taking action against him. I have instructed my men not to yield to pressure from any politician of the area,” he added.
