Manpreet Kaur Dolly, daughter of late Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Capt Kanwaljit Singh, has decided to join the Congress.

She took the decision after a meeting with her supporters at her house in Panchkula on Sunday evening. State Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh will officially announce this at a function at Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

Capt Kanwaljit had been a four-time MLA from Dera Bassi constituency.

Dolly was unhappy over her family being allegedly ignored after her father's death. SAD denied ticket to her and her brother in the last assembly election. Though brother Jasjit Bunny remained loyal to SAD, Dolly contested the election as an independent with the help of mother Sarabjit Kaur.

Congress rebel Deepinder Dhillon had joined SAD in July last year.

Dolly alleged that her father had remained a SAD loyalist but the party ignored the family and their supporters. She alleged that the family had not been given its due in the party, which led to the move. However, her mother was not present at the meeting.

Gurkirat Thuhi, OSD to late Capt Kanwaljit, who had joined the Congress after Kanwaljit's demise, reportedly played a key role in Dolly joining the Congress.
