The abuses that Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia hurled at Congress legislators in the state assembly will haunt him for some time. The unsavory incident and the ruling party assaults on police were on Saturday brought to the notice of union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. State leader of opposition Sunil Jakhar took the matter to Shinde at the Congress Chintan Shivir (introspection camp) in Jaipur.

In a press release issued from Jaipur, Jakhar said he had given the union minister updates on the law and order situation in the state and told him how money coming from the Centre was being diverted.

Last month also, Jakhar had met Shinde and reported political vendetta against Congress workers, especially the withdrawing of the security cover of leaders who had opposed terrorism. "Shinde called him for a meeting to further discuss the plan to revive democracy in Punjab," read the press release.

Since the Akalis had regained power in Punjab, land, liquor, sand, brick, and drug mafia had overpowered the state, Jakhar told the minister. "The mafia helped the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secure votes, so the government can't snub them," said Jakhar.

In threats to democratic system in Punjab, Jakhar recounted the incident in the state assembly where revenue minister Majithia had abused Congress leaders on the floor and tried to intimidate them. "The Speaker murdered democracy by initiating action against the victim Congress legislator instead," he added.

Shinde agreed to seek a report and issue directions to the state government to check atrocities on common people and Congressmen.
