Moga : Ahead of the Moga assembly byelection, the district unit of the BJP has expressed its resentment over the "insensitive attitude of the SAD leadership" and constituted a seven-member committee to press for their demands.
District BJP president Rakesh Sharma said the BJP had always stood with the SAD in all the elections and honoured the coalition "dharma", but the Akalis had not given a political post to any of the district BJP leaders.
He said they had demanded representation in the market committees and the local Improvement Trust. "At one time, the post of Improvement Trust Chairman was with the BJP. But gradually, the Akalis snatched it from us," he said. Senior party leader Dr Subhash Verma has assured the local leaders that he would take up the issue with the newly elected state president Kamal Sharma.
It is learnt that at a meeting here yesterday, some local leaders suggested that Moga being a Hindu-dominated constituency, the BJP should insist that it be allowed to contest the byelection.
Some local BJP leaders are not comfortable with backing Joginder Jain, SAD candidate for the byelection. They had been opposing him for the past several years in the assembly and local body elections.
Welfare panel to oppose SAD candidate
Moga: President of All-India Hindu Welfare Committee Naresh Kumar Sehgal has appealed to the Moga electorate not to vote for the SAD candidate in the ensuing byelection. He alleged that the SAD was interfering in the religious matters of the community. He, however, clarified that it did not mean that the welfare committee had extended support to the Congress. "We have the option to either back a third alternative or to field our own candidate", he added.
