Sangrur : Though the local zila parishad has Rs 60 lakh in its kitty, over 1,500 Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the district will have to wait for the new list of BPL families to come out before they get financial assistance for the repair of their houses.

The new list is being prepared by the district administration. BPL families are to get financial aid under the centrally sponsored scheme Indira Awas Yojna (IAY). The aid is to be given in the ratio of 80:20, with 80 per cent of the total grant to be spent on building pucca houses and 20 per cent to be spent on repairing the houses. A beneficiary is now provided Rs 45,000 to build a pucca house and gets Rs 15,000 to repair the house.

In Sangrur district, the authorities had already given the grant to all 3,758 beneficiaries identified in 2006-07 and 2010-11 to be given aid for the construction of pucca houses. However, the authorities could not provide aid to the remaining 1,500 beneficiaries waiting to get aid to repair their houses. Sources said there were 2,954 BPL families in the waiting list of 2006-07 and 1,326 in 2010-11 that were to get aid to repair their houses. Of the total 4,280 BPL families, 2,780 had been given the aid, leaving 1,500 BPL families that are still to get the grant to repair their houses under the IAY.

Sources in the Zila Parishad said the authorities had already written to the Rural Development Department to get new resolutions passed (relating to identification of BPL families) in the Gram Sabhas to prepare the lists.
