CHANDIGARH: Condemning the brutal and shameful incident of some Punjab Police cops beating up a woman outside a marriage palace at Tarn Taran just because she had complained against attempts at her molestation, former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today lashed out at its claims of “zero tolerance” towards the misconduct by the officials.
He said, the Home Minister Sukhbir Badal seems to have lost control over the things as he appeared to be busy in everything other than the governance.
In a hard hitting statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder maintained that suspending the cops was no solution. He said, this was not an isolated incident but only one in a long series of such incidents taking place under the nose of the Deputy Chief Minister who also happens to be the Home Minister of the State.
Questioning the claims of “zero tolerance” against misconduct or indiscipline, the PCC president said, the police only suspended the cops after the video clip showing them beating up the woman went viral on the net. “Had the incident not been recorded by some person the incident would not even have got noticed”, he pointed out.
The former Chief Minister said, the way the cops behaved with a woman who was complaining against the eve teasing only reflected the mindset of the cops who are being patronized by the Akali jathedars. He pointed out, only a few days ago a lawyer was shot dead by the son of an SGPC member.
Capt Amarinder warned against the recurrence of such incidents at an alarming frequency. These incidents have only proved that the government, particularly the Home Minister was not at all in control of things as he had neither been able to tame his own cadres not the erring police officials.
