NEW DELHI: Former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh met the Congress president Ms Sonia Gandhi here today. The meeting lasted for about an hour. It was a one to one meeting

Well placed sources disclosed that Ms Gandhi wanted Capt Amarinder to join her at the All India Congress Committee at New Delhi.

Capt Amarinder is understood to have conveyed his willingness to join here as and when Ms Gandhi wants him. However, it may take some time as the AICC is going for overall revamp in the coming time.

The former Chief Minister reportedly assured the party president of working for the party and strengthening it in the state ahead of the parliamentary elections.

Capt Amarinder was replaced as the Punjab Congress president by Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa last week. Since he had publicly expressed his displeasure with the choice of his successor the party high command appears to be quite concerned over his stand vis-a-vis the party and Bajwa.

The former Chief Minister still commands an overwhelming following among the party workers, particularly among the peasantry. A section of the leadership publicly said that they considered him to be their leader.

Significantly none of his loyalists, and there are many, attended the lunch hosted by Bajwa after becoming the president.

Ms Gandhi is believed to have sought his support to ensure that the party performs well in the state in the parliamentary elections, to which Capt Amarinder assured her that he will do his best.
