CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress is toying with the idea of bringing a no-confidence motion against assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal in a bid to corner the Badal government.

Congress Legislative Party leader (CLP) Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday told the media that all efforts by him to break the current logjam in the assembly had failed because the Speaker was working under theinfluence and pressure of the government.

He said that, in a private talk, the Speaker had indicated that while he was ready to end the confrontation between the treasury and opposition benches in the spirit of forgive and forget, he was under pressure from the government to insist on expecting an apology from the opposition MLAs.

Jakhar said that the Opposition was not ready to tender an apology for something they had not done. He said that a no-confidence motion against the Speaker would have precedence over all other business of the House and the government would be forced to defend its various acts of omission and commission.

Jakhar added that the Congress had the requisite strength to ensure admission of the no-confidence motion.
