CHANDIGARH: Partap Singh Bajwa, MP, President PPCC said that the Judicial proceedings before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the Tarn Taran case clearly reveal that the Punjab Government, and its police chief, has little trust in its own police, when it comes to providing security and maintaining vigil.

"News reports categorically assert that the Punjab Government and the top brass of the Punjab Police do not depend on their own men for security purposes even the Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal and his family, Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, and even State Director-General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini are among the ones provided with security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force," Bajwa remarked.

"By doing so, the who’s who of the Punjab Government and the State Police have made it clear that their lives are more precious than those of its citizens; and its police force lacks capacity and capability to protect people," he added.

Bajwa categorically said that it is now evident that the Punjab Government has kept CRPF for protecting itself and Punjab Police for wreaking vengeance on its political rivals.

Referring to the UN Human Rights Committee, PPCC President said that the right to life is supreme right of human beings. "It is basic to all human rights. Without it all other rights are without meaning. It is the duty of the State to protect human life against unwarranted actions by public authorities, as well as by private persons (United Nations, 1955)."

"The State is expected to not only establish law-enforcement machinery for preventing breaches of criminal law, but also to protect individuals. But, apparently, the Punjab Government is only interesting in fortifying is own defenses, leaving people in a lurch. It reflects a complete dichotomy between words and actions of the Government," he stated.

Bajwa demanded immediate resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for having no faith in the Punjab Police and his actions prove beyond doubt that he is incapable of performing the Constitutional duty to protect people.
