NEW DELHI: Punjab government spends a whopping amount of Rs. 15.69 crore per month on VIP security, the Supreme Court was informed.Of these VIPs, 65 persons are those who face criminal charges including 6 MLAs.

Some of them include former MLAs facing charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code.Senior Advocate Harish Salve while appearing before a bench headed by Justice GS Sanghvi placed the data regarding security cover given by different states to public functionaries as well as private individuals.

Salve is assisting the court as amicus.The data tabled before the Apex Court has been prepared on the basis of affidavit provided by state government.In case of Punjab, the monthly expenditure is Rs. 15.69 in addition to the expenditure incurred on 20 sections of CRPF and four sections of CISF.

Total number of individuals provided security is 1294 of which 25 individuals are children and family members of VIPs.19 media persons, 36 religious leaders and 75 individuals categorized as ‘others’ have been provided security by Punjab government.
