Barnala : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday lashed out at the SAD-BJP government over the “complete lawlessness” in the state.
Addressing a meeting of party workers, Bajwa said that the SAD-BJP government had failed on both the economic and law and order fronts. He charged the Chief Minister with failing to control crime and the drug menace in the state.
He said Badal had no moral strength to continue in his post. Bajwa charged him with betraying the faith of people. “SAD-BJP got the mandate in the 2012 Assembly elections on false promises and by misusing his position to promote family businesses along with his son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal,” he added.
He alleged that Sukhbir has made “Punjab Police a partner in his illegal trade and police were now shielding mining and drug mafia. A brave police force is reduced to a farce and it is unable to protect its own men in uniform”.
He alleged that about 700 policemen were deployed for the security of the Badal family and Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia had a contingent of about 250 security personnel.
“After my tour of Punjab, I will lead a agitation against illegal mining,” the Punjab Congress chief said, adding that the Punjab Police commandos were being used to give a cover to illegal mining.
The PPCC chief also blamed the Akali Dal for cheating the youth and women with false poll promises made in the party manifesto. “SAD has given false hopes of giving allowance of Rs 1,000 per month to unemployed youth, laptops to students, free education to girls and a secure environment to women.”
Bajwa said the government had withdrawn free education to girls till 12th class and described the decision against the spirit of Right to Education Act.
He also questioned Badal on the Shagun scheme and about the party’s promise of enhancing the allowance from Rs 15,000 to Rs 31,000.
Bajwa said the Congress would fight to the finish and would not allow SAD to rig the panchayat and local bodies elections due by May-end.
He also took a dig at SAD leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, asking which new project he had brought to Sangrur district.
Bajwa also asked the Chief Minister to explain the logic behind imposing property tax when house tax was already being collected in the state.
The Punjab Congress president said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s assertions on property tax were misleading. “House tax could have been converted into property tax and there was no justification of double taxation.”
Others who addressed the meeting included Sangrur MP Vijay Inder Singla and MLAs Kewal Dhillon and Harchand Kaur.
