CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab DGP, KPS Gill has called for the enactment of a law in the country that declared appreciation of terrorist activities illegal.

Speaking on “Punjab terrorism: a Historian's dilemma” a lecture organised by Aitihasiki- Panjab university History Department Alumni Association, Gill said films like “Saada Haq” should not be allowed to be made.

Giving an example of the post World War II Germany where any form of appreciation of the Jewish Holocaust was declared as an offense, Gill said in Punjab it was a common sight for people to move about in cars that had stickers of Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale on them. “It is an offense in Europe to wear symbol represents Nazisim and here we are allowing people to make a film like ‘Saada Haq’ that tries to project that the terrorists in Punjab were doing the right thing? Films which eulogize terrorism should be declared anti-national. In fact those people who made this movie should be arrested,” he said.

He attacked the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) for supporting the film. “I have been told that the SGPC helped the film get a clearance from the censor board. Are the high priests of Punjab OK with the film comparing Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala and Balwant Singh Rajoana to Guru Gobind Singh? This is not the Sikhism that I know. No Sikh scripture justifies killing of people,” Gill added.

Giving historians an overall view of the days of terrorism Gill said that the entire movement can be understood in three phases. “The post World War II Punjab is the first phase. It is important because the role played by the Sikh soldiers in the war needs to be appreciated. The second were the years before and after the operation Blue Star and the last phase began when terrorists started using the AK -47 guns.Taking a dig at the centre, Gill said he had to work really hard to convince government of India to allow use of better weapons by the police. “We had to give our policemen the guns AK -47s we were recovering from slain terrorists.” he said.

Among those who attended the lecture were DGP Punjab and VB chief Suresh Arora, DGP Rajender Singh, ADGP Intelligence,Hardeep Dhillon, ADGP Security Dinkar Gupta, Advisor to UT Administrator K K Sharma, IG NRI Commission Siddhartha Chattopadhyay, CBI DIG Mahesh Aggarwal, DIG Provisioning Amardeep Rai, DIG IB Kala Virk, senior advocates G C Chatrath and Anupam Gupta.
