Punjab Cong to contest Block, Zila Parishad poll on party symbol

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress has decided to contest Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections on party symbol. This was stated by PPCC President Partap Singh Bajwa after meeting of party leaders here at Congress Bhawan.

Bajwa said that Congress would go to polls with the determination of winning majority. He said that Congress workers were in high spirits whereas the ruling SAD-BJP alliance was trying to hijack the election process. He said that he had apprised the AICC president and other central leaders about the situation in Punjab and he was assured full support in fight against ruling alliance.

Bajwa said that he also held a meeting with Congress MPs in Delhi and they also consented to contest elections on party symbol. Bajwa said that they would go to people in panchayat elections with the copy of promises made with people by SAD-BJP alliance in its manifesto. He said that Shiromani Akali Dal had made a promise with the youth to give them unemployment allowance of Rs.13, 000 per month. They made a promise to enhance shagun scheme amount from Rs.15, 000 to 31, 000.

The present government has failed to pay unemployment allowance and no payment of shagun scheme is made for the last two years. He said similar false promises were made on old age and widow pensions. He said that let the ruling party tell the people about their promises. Bajwa said that the intentions of SAD-BJP government were to use all illegal means to grab the control of village panchayats. He said that normally, the block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections were held after Panchayat elections but this time the government has done the opposite. He said that notification for Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections was issued in clandestine manner to give minimum time to opposition party.

He said that legal cells of Congress would start working in all districts and nominations papers would be filed after legal scrutiny at party level. He also directed the party workers to file nomination papers of covering candidates. Rajidnder Kaur Bhattal former Chief Minister who attended the meeting said that party was united and they will face the elections with bold face.

She said that Akalis would not be allowed to hijack the democratic system. All Seniors Congress leaders including all MLA’s, Ex MLA’s, Party Candidates of 2012 Assembly Elections and District Congress Presidents were present in the meeting.
