New Delhi : The desperate and last-minute attempts being attempted by the Congress to scotch all talk about the rift between the Prime Minister and the party seem to be, ironically, giving out more than these are aimed at concealing.

The hurriedly scribbled Congress statement on Monday, rubbishing reports about a section in the party wanting the PM to be replaced, and making the averment that there is no change in the party position that Manmohan Singh will be PM till 2014, only exposed how vulnerable “Mr Clean” had become due to the rather unclean goings-on behind the scenes.

Congress general secretary Janaradan Dwivedi said the party had declared before the 2009 polls that Manmohan Singh will be PM if it gets the mandate to form the government. If at all it needed any reaffirmation, he said, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, while releasing the party manifesto, too had said that Singh will be the PM.

“Whenever there was a need, the party has said in clear terms that Manmohan Singh will be PM till 2014. That is the position today also,” Dwivedi added.

Not that Dwivedi’s statement was involuntary. Neither it was born out of the need to cement the bonding between PM and the party. There was a definite provocation for doing so. He did it as one of the news channels was running the report that some in the Congress desired a change, that too, before the Budget session of Parlaiment.

Even if one were to take at face value Dwivedi’s remark that PM and Congress President have “perfect relationship” in steering the party, the question arises that be so, why no big-bang press meet has been lined up to clean up the air.
