Ludhiana : Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari today alleged that the Akali-BJP government had pushed the state into a debt trap.

“It is a serious cause for concern as the state is heading towards bankruptcy,” he warned while addressing a series of public meetings in support of the party candidates contesting the May 19 zila parishad and block samiti elections in Gill assembly segment here.

Tewari claimed the state debt, according to its own Finance Minister, was likely to cross Rs 1 lakh crore by the end of this financial year and it was increasing at an alarming rate. “Every year, the Akali government is borrowing more than Rs 13,000 crore. Of this, Rs 11,500 crore is being spent to pay debt. It is a unique case where the state is borrowing money only to pay its debt and not for any development works,” he said.

Representing Ludhiana parliamentary constituency, Tewari said, “Any development that is showing up is being carried out on the grants given by the Union Government under its various flagship programmes.”
